A diabetic foot ulcer is an open wound on the foot that can be affected by reduced sensation, pressure, infection or circulation problems. It needs timely clinical assessment.
When should a diabetic foot wound be examined?+
A new wound, redness, swelling, discharge, odour, colour change or a wound that is not improving should be assessed promptly. Do not wait for pain.
Can diabetic foot ulcers heal without amputation?+
Some ulcers can heal with a structured, timely treatment plan. Suitability, treatment options and outcome depend on the individual wound, infection, circulation and overall health.
What are signs of gangrene?+
Black or darkening skin, swelling, odour, discharge or rapidly changing tissue require urgent in-person medical assessment.
